Ayurveda, which translates as “knowledge of life,” dates back 5,000 years to the ancient Sanskrit texts known as the Vedas. According to Ayurvedic philosophy, the universal life force manifests as three different energies, or doshas, known as vata, pitta, and kapha. The Three Doshas:

- Qualities: Light, dry, cold, rough, subtle, and mobile.

- Pitta:
- Characteristics: Linked to fire and water, pitta is the energy of digestion and metabolism. It controls body temperature, digestion, and intelligence.
- Qualities: Hot, sharp, light, oily, and intense.
- Balance: Intelligence, confidence, and strong digestion.
- Imbalance: Anger, inflammation, ulcers, and irritability.
- Kapha:
- Characteristics: Comprised of earth and water, kapha is the energy of structure and lubrication. It maintains body resistance and is responsible for growth and stability.
- Qualities: Heavy, slow, steady, solid, cold, soft, and oily.
- Balance: Love, calmness, and stability.
- Imbalance: Lethargy, weight gain, congestion, and depression.
Your Unique Combination:
Most people have an abundance of one or two of the doshas, with their unique combination determined at the moment of conception. This personal blueprint is known as your prakriti (nature).
Fluctuations and Influences:
Throughout your life, the proportion of each of the three doshas constantly fluctuates due to various factors:
- Environment: Changes in your surroundings can affect your dosha balance.
- Diet: What you eat can either balance or imbalance your doshas.
- Seasons: Different times of the year can increase or decrease specific doshas.
- Climate: The weather and overall climate influence dosha balance.
- Age: Different stages of life are associated with different dominant doshas.
